FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Hebron Fire Protection District to Host PTSD Speaker for Public Safety Professionals
Fire Departments Three Times More Likely to Have Member Suicide than Line of Duty Death
Hebron, KY – Hebron Firefighters will host Dr. David Griffin of Charleston, SC in his seminar, Turning PTSD into PTG, It will Change Your Life. The seminar will provide tools for recognizing and overcoming PTSD in public safety. Research compiled by the Ruderman Foundation found Firefighters and Police Officers are more likely to die in a suicide than in a line-of-duty-death. The National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation estimates fire departments are three times more likely to have a member suicide than perish in the line of duty.
“We have seen the research for several years now and know firefighters, EMS, police officers, and dispatchers are struggling,” said Anthony Scheben, Chief of Hebron Fire Protection District. “Warning signs are being missed and we need to provide more opportunity to help our people, to help the community of public safety.”
Turning PTSD into PTG, It will Change Your Life is a seminar built around Dr. Griffin’s own struggle with PTSD following the deadly 2007 Sofa Super Store Fire where nine firefighters lost their lives. In the seminar, Dr. Griffin provides self and peer assessment tools as well as options for turning PTSD into personal growth. The seminar is geared towards public safety personnel, retirees and their families.
“Most if not all of our brothers and sisters in the public safety community have been impacted by a suicide in our region,” explained Scheben. “We need to stop losing our people to mental health.”
The event will take place from 9am to 4pm on Friday, February 1st at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott [2395 Progress Drive, Hebron, KY 41048]. Registration is required by Monday January 28th. Cost is $25 is will help offset event costs. For tickets or more information visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/turn-ptsd-into-ptg-it-will-change-your-life-tickets-53767863126.
